A Legacy of Heart and Determination: The 1993-1994 Senior Football City Championship Team

The 1993-1994 Senior Football City Championship stands as one of the proudest moments in Selwyn House School’s history. It wasn’t just the school’s first-ever championship at the Senior level, but a victory that symbolized the resilience, heart, and determination of a truly remarkable group of athletes. That team exemplified the Gryphon spirit, fighting for every yard and coming together to achieve something that had never been done before at Selwyn House. Leading the charge that season was Chris Gayton '94, who delivered an unforgettable performance in the championship game, scoring four touchdowns and showcasing the kind of grit and skill that defined the team’s journey to victory. Alongside Chris was David McKinnon ’94, whose perfectly timed pass to Ben Wearing '94 resulted in a crucial touchdown that helped seal their place in history.

During the 46th Annual Old Boys' Montreal Reunion on October 4, this legendary team was honoured in a ceremony that brought them back into the spotlight. Mike Maurovich, the Head Coach of the 1993 Championship team and now Director of Athletics, took the stage alongside Mike Downey, then-Defensive Coordinator and now Headmaster, to reflect on not just the victory but the journey and the lasting impact of those players. Both coaches shared heartfelt speeches about the character and determination that carried the team to victory, emphasizing that it was about much more than the championship game—it was about the lifelong connections forged on the field and within the Selwyn House community.

The next day, October 5, the celebration continued at the Homecoming Games, where the Old Boys from the 1993-1994 team stepped onto the field for a special ceremonial kickoff. Ben Wearing '94 held the ball as Stuart Weigensberg '94 kicked it off, recreating the magic from their championship days. In a heartwarming full-circle moment, many Old Boys donned their original jerseys, adding to the nostalgia of the weekend.

The story of the 1993-1994 team is about more than athletic success; it’s a testament to character, brotherhood, and the strong sense of community that defines Selwyn House School.
