A team comprised of Selwyn House Grade 10 students Nabeel Ahmed, Jarren Fefer and Harry Hosker took first place in Senior Overall Team Standings at the first-ever Canadian round of the World Scholar’s Cup, held January 22 and 23 at St. George’s School in Montreal.
That same Senior team took top honours in the Team Debate component.
At the same time, Junior team made up of Grade 8 students Jonathan Milner, Paul Humennyj and Bernard Liu finished in Second Place Overall.
A team comprised of Grade 7 students William Sebag, Christopher Denham and Michael Carrara took fifth place in the Junior Team Debate. Those same two teams also won second-place honours in the Senior and Junior Team Bowl categories, respectively.
Selwyn House sent three Junior Teams and one Senior Team to the Cup. In addition those already named, a third SHS Junior Team was made up of Grade 8 students Justin Belland and Philip de la Sablonnière.
The World Scholar’s Cup is both a competition and a celebration of learning. Students participate in four activities: collaborative writing, general knowledge (an individual event), scholar’s bowl (team event), and team debate. The curriculum changes every year, and is based on arts, literature, music, social studies, history, law and some pop culture references.
The Selwyn House competitors did spectacularly well in the individual awards. All students placed among the top five in the following individual events: Individual Debate, Individual Writing, Challenge Subjects, History Challenge, Literature Challenge, Science Challenge, Social Studies Challenge, Arts Challenge, Team Debate, Team Writing and Team Challenge.
Seven SHS students were named Champion Scholars.
All of the Selwyn House teams scored well enough to qualify for the international round of the World Scholar’s Cup, should they wish to attend.
