Selwyn House is pleased to announce the recipients of the Grade 7 Academic Merit Scholarships. The awards were given to four of the 18 Grade 6 students who wrote the combined English, French and math scholarship exam on Saturday, January 30.
Nicholas Johnson earned the highest combined score, and received the first prize Selwyn House School Old Boys’ Association Merit Scholarship. Awarded in recognition of the tradition of academic excellence at Selwyn House, the scholarship is worth $2,500 per year for five years.
Michael Frances had the second-highest score, and was awarded the $1,000/year Aditya Pathak Merit Scholarship, worth $1,000 per year for five years. This award was established in memory of a Grade 9 student, Aditya Pathak, who was a valued member of the Selwyn House community, and who was appreciated by his peers and teachers for his sense of humanity.
Cullen Chung and Nicolas Cossette finished third and fourth, respectively. They were each awarded a Grade 7 Academic Merit Scholarship worth $1,000 per year.
The scholarships were officially presented to the winners and their parents at an assembly of Grade 6 students on February 18. In addition to Headmaster Hal Hannaford, Admission Director Nathalie Gervais and Elementary School Head Kathy Funamoto, the ceremony was attended by Aditya Pathak’s mother, Asha, and Old Boys’ Board Member Geoff Moore.
“Think of the success your friends have had and use that as an inspiration,” Headmaster Hal Hannaford told the assembled students, reminding them that “Achievement has a silent partner: effort.”
Reading off a list of Selwyn House graduates who have gone on to great achievements, Geoff Moore reminded the students that, when they graduate they will join the 2300 members of the Selwyn House Old Boys’ Association. “Someday you will all be part of that,” he said.
