Etienne Cote ’85 was one of 10 outstanding Canadian university teachers featured in the February 23 Student Issue of Maclean’s magazine. Etienne, who teaches veterinary cardiology at the University of Prince Edward Island’s Atlantic Veterinary College, was chosen to be a recipient of the 3M National Teaching Fellowship because of his human approach to pet medicine and for mentoring his students even after they graduate.

3M fellows become lifetime members of the society, and gather at Banff for brainstorming sessions on ways to improve higher education. The organization rewards dedication to teaching in an age when academics too often concentrate solely on research.

Etienne is also a 2009 recipient of the Distinguished Teaching Award given by the Association of Atlantic Universities.

“Dr. Côté is an outstanding teacher who demonstrates a tireless commitment to continuously improving learning for his students,” said Dr. Donald L. Reynolds, Dean of the Atlantic Veterinary College at UPEI on the occasion of the award. “We are proud to have him recognized in such a deserving manner.”

In the photo, taken at the 2010 Old Boys’ Reunion in Montreal, Etienne is standing second from right.
