Decrypting History: A Math Movie Night

On Monday, March 25th, the Senior Math Department hosted our inaugural Math Movie Night by screening The Imitation Game. This movie retells the story of the English mathematician Alan Turing, who worked with a team of mathematicians to crack the Enigma cipher device used by the Germans during WWII. Students from The Study School were invited to join our Grade 9 to 12 students for the event; snacks and a panel discussion followed the movie. Panelists included Mr. Bedard, Head of Computer Science, Ms. Ouimet, Senior Math Teacher, Mr. Kalichman, Middle School Math Teacher, and Old Boys: Zachary Berkson-Korenberg '14 PhD candidate in physics at McGill University and Matthew Behr '16, Project Designer at Ecosystem. After the movie, the panelists were thrilled to answer our students' questions about recent advances in computer science and how this relates to cryptography.
