A Mathematical Renaissance in Senior School

On May 15, Ms. Sayegh, the Senior School Mathematics Department Head, spoke at an assembly to acknowledge our students' participation and achievements in various math competitions held in the latter half of the school year. She highlighted Selwyn House School's current renaissance in mathematical competitiveness. This year, thanks to the students' motivation and enthusiasm, three additional contests were written that are not usually part of our program.

In the Cayley Contest, written by Grade 10 students, Selwyn ranked first in the province out of over 50 schools—making us the Provincial Champions, a prestigious recognition not achieved since 2014! Nicholas C., Jerry H., Shen H., Ken G., Thomas X., and Ziye Z. all scored in the top 25% in Canada, with Ziye earning the top spot.

Ms. Sayegh continued by celebrating the achievements in the Grade 9 Pascal Contest, where Selwyn House ranked 5th in our zone out of 13 schools and 14th overall in Quebec, out of well over 50 schools. Among the Grade 9 participants, Vojtech B., Nathan C., William L., Lanq Q., Adam S., and our top scorer, Oli M., all scored in the top 25% in Canada. Bravo!

In the Fermat Contest, written by Grade 11 students, Selwyn House ranked 3rd in our zone and 11th in the province. Of this year’s Grade 11 participants, Jerry C., EJ K., Chenchen S., Leon X., and Ian Y., our top scorer and one of the top six students in Quebec, scored among the top 25% in Canada.

The Galois Contest, for Grade 10 students, and the Hypatia Contest, for Grade 11 students, are 75-minute free-response contests held by the University of Waterloo. In the Galois Contest, Ken G., Thomas X., and Ziye Z. scored in the top 25% in Canada. In the Hypatia Contest, Jerry C. and Leon Z. also scored in the top 25% in Canada, earning Certificates of Distinction.

Finally, the Euclid Contest, aimed at our most gifted Grade 11 and Grade 12 mathematicians, is a very challenging 2.5-hour free-response contest. This year’s Euclid Contest winner is Jerry C. Congratulations to all the participants for their outstanding efforts and achievements. The entire school is proud of your competitive spirit and desire to challenge yourselves.
