Senior School Athletics Awards

The Senior School Athletic Awards were held on May 24, celebrating the dedication and achievements of our athletes throughout the year. We also honoured our 2024 Hall of Fame inductees, Joel Anthony '99 and Angelo Esposito '06.

Joel Anthony joined Selwyn House in Grade 7 in 1994. In 1997 he went on to Emmanuel Christian School followed by Dawson College. From 2002-2004 he attended Pensacola and then the University of Las Vegas Nevada (UNLV) from 2004-2007. He is the only SHS Old Boy to have played in the NBA, playing for the Miami Heat, Boston Celtics, Detroit Pistons, and San Antonio Spurs over a 13-year career. He won two NBA championships with the Heat in 2012 and 2013 and is a former member of the Canada Basketball Team. Following his NBA career, he played two seasons in Argentina, signing with San Lorenzo of Argentina's Liga Nacional de Básquetbol (LNB). In December of 2021, Joel was named the first General Manager of the Montreal Alliance, a Canadian professional basketball team that competes in the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL).

Angelo Esposito attended Selwyn House from 2001-2003. He then attended Shattuck-St. Mary's School from 2003-2006. He competed for the Quebec Remparts in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL), winning the Memorial Cup in 2006 with legendary former Montreal Canadiens goalie Patrick Roy as head coach. He also competed in the 2009 World Junior Championships in Ottawa, winning gold. He was drafted 20th overall in the 2007 NHL Draft by the Pittsburgh Penguins before embarking on a nine-year playing career in the American Hockey League (AHL), the QMJHL, the Finnish Elite League, the Italian Hockey League - Serie A, and the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL). Angelo is a Player Development Specialist at Hockey Etcetera and has played a key role in developing Selwyn House School's hockey program.

During the evening, we also introduced the new Gryphon Fund. The announcement was made with a video featuring Tim Fleiszer '92, Chairman of The Gryphon Fund, which supports the costs associated with our expanding athletic programs. A heartfelt thank you to the coaches for their unwavering support and guidance. We also extend our gratitude to everyone who made this night a success, including our Chef Silvana, her kitchen crew and the IT Department. Gryphons forever!
